About Us
The Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy has been in operation since August 1997. Since 2017 we have been operating a Preschool and Toddler Program for ages 18-months to 5 years old. Prior to 2017, we operated an elementary school program, accredited by the Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC).
The Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy is a “dream realized” of the late Dr. Herbert Guice, Pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church for more than 57 years.
In June 2009, Reverend Frank Darby, Jr. (pictured to the side) became Pastor and CEO of Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy and has continued to fulfil and enhance the legacy of Dr. Guice.
The Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy is a learning community of students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders who share in the commitment to excellence for each child, through effective, ongoing interaction and communication between the school and home.
The students’ educational experiences are enhanced through learning the School Affirmation Pledge that begins with, “I AM GOD’S CHILD, AN AWESOME LEADER”
and the School Song.
Milestone
The state-of-the-art, beautiful edifice of the Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy is the first religious, educational institution in Oakland to be built from the ground by an African-American Baptist Church.
Motto
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
School Philosophy
- Dr. Herbert Guice Christian Academy is a Christian, faith-based community composed of parents (guardians), staff and students bound together in mutual love and respect for each other.
- The school is dedicated to living the Gospel message and sees its role as preparing young people to live a Christian life in an evolving world of change.
- Students are guided through the curriculum in the development of a quality education and a moral value system. The curriculum is carefully coordinated to instill a strong foundation in the basic skills, as well as develop high levels of analytical and critical thinking through age-appropriate activities. The development of the total child is addressed through moral, social, psychological and physical development.
- The unique qualities and talents of each child are encouraged and nurtured. The education environment is a community where responsibility for learning is placed upon the learners, the staff as professional resource persons, and the parents (guardians) as nurturers and supporters of their child(ren).

Organizations/Clubs
The Grandparents Club
The Grandparents Club is a community organization comprised of grandparents (both grandfathers and grandmothers) founded by the late Martha Brown. The Grandparents Club is committed to making a change in the community by volunteering their time, energy, talent and funds, working with the students, teachers, administrators, parents and guardians to ensure success. The Grandparents Club instituted an “ADOPT A CHILD” Program, where the members pay a portion of the tuition for qualifying students, which helps to defray the cost to families.
